DALLAS (AP) - Law enforcement figures show Dallas is on pace to have its highest number of homicides since 2009.

The Dallas Morning News (https://bit.ly/2gJlMFe ) reports Dallas Police Department numbers for this year, through Dec. 6, show 160 people slain. That compares to 136 killings last year in Dallas.

The city in 2009 recorded 166 slayings.

In March, then-police Chief David Brown formed a task force to respond to an increase in slayings and other crimes, including assaults and robberies. Brown at the time said many of the crimes were related to drugs or domestic violence.

Five officers were slain by a sniper during a July attack in Dallas amid a protest against the fatal police shootings of black men in other states.

Brown retired in October after 33 years on the force.
