BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (AP) - A 30-year-old California man accused of killing his pregnant fiance and unborn child has confessed to the murders.

Manuel Vela said Monday in a jailhouse interview with KBAK-TV in Bakersfield (https://bit.ly/2htblqB ) that he choked 30-year-old Katrina Rivera to death last week after an argument outside their home.

Paramedics tried to save the unborn baby, who was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Vela, who pleaded guilty earlier this year to a domestic violence charge, was arrested Saturday following a police chase.

Vela tells the news station that he is mentally ill. He says that while he does not want to kill himself, death would be a fair punishment.
