GRAY COURT, S.C. (AP) - A Greer teen died in a crash after stopping to help a driver on the side of the interstate in Laurens County.

Laurens County Deputy Coroner Vickie Cheek tells local media 19-year-old Jacob Robert Oaks was pronounced dead shortly after 1 a.m. Monday.

Cheek says Oaks pulled his 2007 Toyota pickup onto the shoulder of Interstate 385 at the 18 mile marker near Gray Court. She says Oaks was assisting the driver of a disabled Ford truck by letting them use his phone to call for help.

A tractor-trailer struck Oaks’ vehicle, trapping him inside.

S.C. Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Tony Keller says the driver of the tractor-trailer was taken to a Greenville hospital. His condition is unknown.

The Ford truck was also struck, but the driver wasn’t inside.

The Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the wreck.
