LAWRENCE, Mass. (AP) - A judge has dismissed all charges against a former Massachusetts high school swim coach accused of giving prescription medications to a student on the team.

An attorney for Elizabeth Backler says the Lawrence judge threw out charges of distribution of prescription narcotics just before her trial on Monday.

Backler, a former coach at North Andover, had been accused of giving the girl OxyContin and Valium after the girl complained of pain in 2014.

Prosecutors alleged Backler, of Newburyport, befriended the 16-year-old girl, texted her, sent her cards and gifts, took her to dinner and invited her to her apartment.

A spokeswoman for Essex District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett’s office says prosecutors agreed with the defense that all charges should be dismissed after meeting with the teenager and her mother.
