BESSEMER CITY, N.C. (AP) - Officials in Gaston County say a man is facing a pair of charges after his 2-year-old son shot himself with an unsecured gun inside the family’s home.

Gaston County Police told local media outlets that 28-year-old Michael Shawn Walls is charged with felony child neglect and misdemeanor failure to store a firearm to protect a minor. Walls is free on an unsecured bond. It’s not known if he has an attorney.

Sgt. J.D. Cole said the child found a .25-caliber handgun on the bed on Nov. 10 and shot himself in the stomach. Officials say the boy is expected to make a full recovery.

The Shelby Star reports the boy and another child were in the home when the shooting occurred, and social workers took both children into custody.
