ST. LOUIS (AP) - A suspected car thief and a passenger in his car are critically injured in a crash after leading police on a chase from East St. Louis, Illinois, into St. Louis.

The crash happened around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday. Authorities initially said one person was dead but later said that while he was initially pronounced dead, he showed signs of life and was hospitalized.

Police say the speeding car prompted a chase over the Martin Luther King Bridge into St. Louis. The fleeing car struck another vehicle on the bridge then sped along Interstate 70 before crashing when it ran under the trailer portion of a tractor-trailer.

No other injuries were reported.
