MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - A judge has denied a request to change the venue for the trial of a man accused of shooting five demonstrators protesting the shooting death of a black man by Minneapolis police last year.
The Star Tribune (https://strib.mn/2huxrJB ) reports Hennepin County Judge Hilary Caligiuri denied the defense team’s motion, saying the case “has not generated massive pretrial publicity.”
The 24-year-old Allen Scarsella, of Lakeville, is scheduled to face trial next month on assault counts.
Prosecutors allege Scarsella and three other men meant to cause trouble on Nov. 23, 2015, when they went to an encampment of demonstrators protesting the fatal shooting of 24-year-old Jamar Clark in a confrontation with two white officers. Charges allege Scarsella, who is white, shot and wounded five men.
Scarsella’s attorneys have said he acted in self-defense.
