TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - A Tucson man is accused of child abuse after a 2-year-old girl was found unresponsive in a bathtub.

Tucson police say 27-year-old Warren Gastelum has been booked into jail and the girl remains hospitalized in grave condition.

Police say officers were called to a home late Saturday after a reported near-drowning at an apartment.

They say Gastelum is the boyfriend of the child’s mother and was home alone that night with four children all younger than age 7 while his girlfriend was at work.

Gastelum told police he had placed the girl in the bath and stepped away for a few minutes and called 911 when she was found unresponsive.

Doctors told police that the child had significant injuries that were inconsistent with drowning or a fall in the bathtub.
