SUNDERLAND, England (AP) - Chelsea moved six points clear at the top of the English Premier League by beating last-place Sunderland 1-0 on Wednesday, with Cesc Fabregas’ first-half goal earning the team its 10th straight win.
The Spain midfielder picked up the ball 35 meters out, exchanged passes with Willian and stroked home a low finish into the corner from the edge of the area in the 40th minute.
Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois preserved the lead with two excellent saves in the final minutes.
Chelsea is one victory away from matching the club record 11 straight wins achieved in the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons.
Eden Hazard missed the game for Chelsea because of a knock he sustained in the 1-0 win over West Bromwich Albion on Sunday.
Sunderland stayed a point adrift at the bottom after 16 games.
