CASTRO VALLEY, Calif. (AP) - Authorities are investigating the death of a woman found inside the charred garage of a San Francisco Bay Area home as a homicide.

The East Bay Times reports (https://bit.ly/2hNqJNv ) the 59-year-old woman did not die in the Monday fire. The blaze was likely a cover up for a crime scene. Authorities say an autopsy shows she was brutally attacked before the Castro Valley fire.

Her name was not released. The woman lived alone since the death of her husband last year. Police declined to say exactly how she was killed.

The fire began in the attic of the home and was extinguished in about 10 minutes. The fire also injured a firefighter, who was taken to a hospital, treated for a minor injury and released. No one has been arrested and police have yet to determine a motive in the killing.
