GREENCASTLE, Ind. (AP) - A central Indiana man faces an attempted murder charge for allegedly shooting a police officer following a reported theft.

Putnam County prosecutors also charged 48-year-old Jeffrey P. Hunter with felony resisting law enforcement Tuesday and misdemeanor battery and theft.

Court documents say Hunter stole a chain saw Dec 10 and fled a Greencastle store after struggling with employees.

The Greencastle man allegedly confronted officers at his home and exchanged gunfire with Cloverdale officer Luke Brown.

Brown was shot in the chest, but wasn’t seriously injured because he was wearing a bulletproof vest.

Hunter was struck in the torso by gunfire. A warrant has been issued for his arrest once he’s released from an Indianapolis hospital.

It wasn’t clear if Hunter has an attorney who could speak on his behalf.
