LOS ANGELES (AP) - A 76-year-old man charged with murder in the 2001 killing of his wife has died and a Los Angeles County judge has dismissed the case.

Richard Cole had been accused of fatally stabbing his wife, Charlotte Cole, whose body was found behind an Arcadia restaurant.

Cole was initially a person of interest his 50-year-old wife’s death, but he wasn’t arrested until 2012. He pleaded not guilty.

The Los Angeles Times reports (https://lat.ms/2gL3plT ) the judge on Tuesday dismissed the case against Cole after he was found dead in a residence Dec. 6.

The cause of his death is under investigation.
