YORK, Maine (AP) - Legislators from Maine say the U.S. Senate’s passage of the Water Infrastructure Improvements for the Nation Act will benefit projects in the state.

Republican Sen. Susan Collins says the bill authorizes dozens of port and harbor projects around the country. The projects include the Portsmouth Harbor and Piscataqua River Navigation Project.

Collins says the bill also requires funds be used for operations and maintenance needs at emerging harbors. That is designed to benefit small harbor projects around the country such as those in York, Biddeford, Wells, Saco, Kennebunkport and Beals Harbor.

Democratic Rep. Chellie Pingree says the act will provide better navigation to Portsmouth Harbor and Piscataqua River. She also says the assistance for small harbors will also help them be competitive.
