HAUPPAUGE, N.Y. (AP) - A Long Island police officer has been indicted on charges in connection with a wrong-way fatal crash in West Islip.

The Suffolk County district attorney’s office says 24-year-old Robert Scheuerer pleaded not guilty Wednesday to aggravated vehicular homicide and nine other charges. If convicted on all charges he faces up to 26 years in prison.

Authorities say the off-duty Scheuerer had a blood alcohol content of more than twice the legal limit when he struck a van on Sunrise Highway on Sept. 27. The van caught fire, killing the driver, 37-year-old Brian Fusaro, of Bay Shore. The officer has been suspended without pay.

Scheuerer’s attorney, William Petrillo, said there were other factors besides alcohol that led to the crash. He said Scheuerer was “very much concerned” for the victim’s family.
