SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A Utah man has been sentenced to 15 years to life in prison for attacking another man with a hammer and knife.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports (https://bit.ly/2hx6ipj ) that that 20-year-old Gerardo Enrique Perez pleaded guilty to charges of murder, aggravated burglary and assault in the January 2015 attack on 68-year-old Leslie Beus of Kearns.

Charging documents say Beus tried to escape by going in his house but Perez followed him. Witnesses told police Perez was acting strangely and making noises like a zombie.

Defense attorney Robin Ljungberg says Perez has been diagnosed with a mental illness but did not specify which one. He says Perez is doing better now that he’s on medication and receiving treatment.

Prosecutor Blake Hills says mental illness warrants sensitive but that Perez can’t undo the damage he has done.
