BALTIMORE (AP) - A family is demanding to know how a 53-year-old homeless mother died in a Baltimore jail earlier this month.

Tanelle Mitchell tells the Baltimore Sun (https://bsun.md/2hpbFZz ) that her mother, Bernice Mitchell, died Dec. 4, but her family was not notified about the death until four days later.

Mitchell’s family says they still don’t know how Bernice Mitchell first came into contact with police on Dec. 3, or what happened before she was found unresponsive in a cell at the Central Booking and Intake Facility the next day. Staff was unable to revive her.

A corrections department spokesman says the department is withholding information until the investigation is completed and the cause and manner of Mitchell’s death is determined.

Corrections spokesman Gerard Shields says a preliminary investigation indicated no foul play.
