WESTERLY, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island State Police say no charges will be filed against the former transportation director for Westerly Public Schools after a 5-year-old girl was left unattended inside a school bus.

Capt. Matthew Moynihan tells The Westerly Sun (https://bit.ly/2gLyiIJ ) police finished their investigation last week and concluded there wasn’t enough evidence to bring charges against Peter Denomme.

Denomme lost track of the girl after he was supposed to drop her off at her home on Sept. 21. Police had launched the probe after receiving a complaint from an attorney for the girl’s family.

The family and their attorney have said the child was left alone for more than 40 minutes.

Denomme resigned in October. He had worked for Westerly Public Schools since 2009.

He couldn’t be reached for comment on Wednesday.
