CALEDONIA, N.Y. (AP) - A 50-year-old upstate New York man has been charged with criminally negligent homicide in connection with a hunting accident that killed his sister-in-law.

Livingston County Sheriff’s investigators charged John Lander of Rochester for causing the death of 45-year-old Sharon Lander, also of Rochester. John Lander, the victim’s brother-in-law, was arraigned Wednesday in Caledonia Town Court and released on $3,000 bond.

Prosecutors didn’t know if he has a lawyer.

The shooting occurred late in the afternoon of Nov. 27 in a wooded area near the Genesee River in Livingston County, south of Rochester. Sharon Lander was in a hunting party with four others when she was shot in the abdomen. She died at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester.

Police say the shooting occurred in terrain that made it difficult for first responders to get to the victim.
