HALETHORPE, Md. (AP) - Baltimore County Police say a man shot and wounded a teen who was breaking into his car.

Police said Thursday that officers were called to the Halethorpe area Wednesday morning for a report of a theft from a car.

The police statement says a 44-year-old man saw a teen breaking into his car and went outside with a rifle to confront him. He said the 17-year-old boy swung a knife or screwdriver at him, and he shot the teen, who fled but was later taken into custody.

Police spokesman Cpl. John Wachter says the teen was treated for a gunshot wound to an upper extremity. The youth is charged with assault, theft, and other charges.

The state’s attorney’s office will review the actions of the man who shot the youth.
