GLENVILLE, N.Y. (AP) - Police say a one of a 22-year-old railroad worker’s arms was severed when it was run over by a freight train at an upstate New York industrial complex.

Police in the Schenectady County town of Glenville say the Pan Am Railways employee was working near a track switching box early Thursday morning when he apparently slipped on ice and one of his arms ended up on the track as a slow-moving train approached.

Officers retrieved the arm and gave it to the medical crew that responded to the scene.

The man, who lives in nearby Mechanicville, was taken to Albany Medical Center. Information on his condition was available.

The investigation into the accident is being handled by the North Billerica, Massachusetts-based company’s railway police.
