NEW YORK (AP) - Outgoing Rep. Scott Garrett was at Trump Tower in Manhattan, but declined to say why he was there.

Garrett arrived around 10 a.m. and told reporters he wasn’t meeting with President-elect Donald Trump or his running mate Mike Pence.

The Republican declined to say with whom he was meeting.

On Nov. 15, Garrett told reporters he’d be interested in serving as chairman of Securities and Exchange Commission. It’s unclear if he is being considered for that position.

Democrat Josh Gottheimer last month toppled the seven-term conservative stalwart in northern New Jersey’s 5th District, a GOP stronghold. He waged a well-funded campaign in a heated race that included Gottheimer calling Garrett a bigot and Garrett calling Gottheimer a liar.
