NEW ORLEANS (AP) - The fall white-shrimp season is about to close for most waters in Louisiana.

NOLA.com/The Times-Picayune reports (https://bit.ly/2hxI2FX ) the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries announced most inshore waters will be closed to harvesting white shrimp beginning Monday. The department said recently sampling by its biologists shows the average white shrimp are smaller than the minimum size limit for possession.

The closure includes waters in Louisiana from the Mississippi state line to the Texas border. Exceptions include Lake Pontchartrain, Chef Menteur and Rigolets passes, Lake Borgne, Mississippi Sound and the Mississippi River-Gulf Outlet.

All state-controlled outside waters will remain open to catching white shrimp.

Licensed bait dealers will still be allowed to harvest and sell live shrimp to fishermen in the closed areas.
