COLUMBUS, Miss. (AP) - An attorney says a Columbus man who’s charged with killing his own father acted in self-defense.
The victim was the 39-year-old son of Columbus Mayor Robert Smith, and the man charged is the mayor’s 20-year-old grandson.
Davius Roshard Smith was charged with murder Friday, two days after his father, Robert Smith Jr., was shot to death at the home where the two men lived.
A judge set bond at $100,000.
Defense attorney Rod Ray tells The Commercial Dispatch (https://bit.ly/2hD9Uso ) that Davius Smith is a college student who has “never been in trouble.” Ray says his client turned himself in to Mississippi Bureau of Investigation agents.
Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant says an autopsy shows Robert Smith Jr. was shot in the abdomen.
