COLUMBUS, Ga. (AP) - A Columbus man has been sentenced to life in prison for the 2012 slayings of his girlfriend and her 6-year-old son.

The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer reports (https://bit.ly/2gIf3uw ) a judge sentenced 59-year-old Vince Martinez Harris to prison for life without the possibility of parole Thursday. A jury convicted him in November for killing Tina Green Hall and her son, Jeremy, in a staged murder-suicide.

Prosecutors say Harris shot his girlfriend first as she lay in bed with her young son, then killed the boy. Afterward he called police and reported Hall had killed her son and then shot herself.

Harris, who had been a bus driver for Columbus State University, insisted he was innocent. During his sentencing hearing Thursday he said: “How can you repent on something that you did not do?”
