AVELLA, Pa. (AP) - A medical examiner says a western Pennsylvania man shot by state troopers when he rushed at them with a knife has been declared brain dead.

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner says 20-year-old Steven Ward was pronounced dead Wednesday night at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh.

Ward was shot at his home near Avella in Washington County after his mother called 911 to report Ward was “out of control,” breaking things and fighting with relatives about 12:30 a.m. Dec. 7.

Washington County District Attorney Eugen Vittone has said troopers from the Washington, Pennsylvania barracks were justified in shooting Ward when he rushed at them with a 10-inch Bowie knife. Ward’s family told police he planned to rush the troopers when they arrived in hopes they’d kill him.
