AKRON, Ohio (AP) - A northeast Ohio man will serve life in prison for the rape and brutal beating of his fiancée’s 3-year-old son while the boy was under his care in May 2015.

Twenty-six-year-old Zachary Meyerson was sentenced Thursday immediately following his conviction on charges of rape, felonious assault and endangering children in Summit County Common Pleas Court.

County prosecutor Sherri Bevan Walsh said the Cuyahoga Falls man tortured and abused an innocent boy, violating the trust between child and caregiver.

Meyerson burned the boy with a cigarette lighter, knocked him unconscious and sexually assaulted him on May 20, 2015 while his fiancée was at work.

An emergency brain surgery saved the boy’s life. He has since recovered from his injuries, but Walsh said the emotional impact of what happened is still unknown.
