PHILADELPHIA (AP) - A 16-year-old Philadelphia boy has been arrested and charged as a juvenile after police say he was found carrying a gun in his backpack at school.

The Randolph Technical High School student was taken into custody Thursday on gun possession charges after the firearm triggered metal detectors upon his entrance to the building.

The school was placed on lockdown immediately following the discovery. It’s unclear if the weapon was loaded.

School officials secured the gun and the student until police arrived around 8:45 a.m. The lockdown was lifted about an hour later after police determined that there was no further threat.

A statement from the School District of Philadelphia said officials are cooperating with police and all district procedures are being followed.
