BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - Police in Burlington say they’re investigating after two overdoses and two apparent overdose deaths occurred over the past week in the city.

Burlington Police Deputy Chief Shawn Burke tells WPTZ-TV (https://bit.ly/2hClPnD ) police are calling the two deaths “untimely” and says there is evidence in both recent cases that the individuals were using opiates.

In a separate incident, police say officers responded to a couple overdosing on heroin in the New North End. Responding officers administered Narcan, an opiate overdose reversal drug, and the couple survived.

Police are investigating whether there are any bad batches in the area, including some that could be laced with powerful painkiller fentanyl. They are awaiting the results of toxicology tests, which will take six to eight weeks to come back.

This story has been corrected to show that Shawn Burke is deputy chief, not chief.
