A short-lived Polar Vortex blast has brought the coldest weather of the season to northern New England.

The National Weather Service says the temperature plunged early Friday to 18 below in Richford Center, Vermont; 16 below in Jackman and Greenville, Maine; and 13 below in Carroll and Easton, New Hampshire.

Strong winds made it seem even colder. The Maine coast was lashed with 50 mph gusts, knocking out power for hundreds of customers.

The region will see a gradual warming with a snowstorm on tap Saturday followed by even warmer temperatures that’ll approach 50, accompanied by rain, in parts of the region on Sunday.
