COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - The South Carolina Department of Corrections has charged and fired three corrections officers who they say tried to kill an inmate in their care.

Local news organizations report that 26-year-old Jarrell Kwabbie Boyan, 24-year-old Pernell Fogle and 24-year-old Jaquan Smith are all charged with attempted murder and misconduct in office. The South Carolina Department of Corrections announced that it had fired the three on Wednesday.

The officers are accused of stabbing a Kirkland Correctional Institute inmate on Oct. 6 while the inmate was handcuffed.

The department of corrections says all three were placed on administrative suspension without pay after the incident.

The officers were booked Thursday at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center in Columbia. It’s unclear if they have attorneys.
