ANOTHER ZIKA ZONE CLEARED AS ART BASEL OPENS IN MIAMI

Florida Gov. Rick Scott said in a statement Friday that the timing is great news as visitors are pouring into Miami for the annual Art Basel festival. Concern that the festival would be thwarted flared in July when the first cases of Zika transmission through mosquito bites on the U.S. mainland were reported in Miami’s arts district of Wynwood and later in Miami Beach. The worry has since subsided.

MAN SUSPECTED OF WIFE’S DISAPPEARANCE ARRESTED IN KENTUCKY

Chief Deputy U.S. Marshal Brian Parrish said in a news release that 58-year-old Jarvis “Wayne” Madison was taken into custody on Friday. Authorities say his 44-year-old wife Rachael Madison didn’t return from a jog Sunday while staying with relatives in Ormond-by-the-Sea, which is near Daytona Beach. She’d been in Florida since Nov. 16.

DRUG DEALER GETS 30 YEARS FOR FATAL OVERDOSE

A U.S. Attorney’s Office news release says 25-year-old Christopher Sharod Massena was sentenced Friday. He was convicted in August of supplying drugs that led to death. Authorities say Massena sold fentanyl, a synthetic opioid, to 23-year-old Christian Hernandez in February.

TRAPPERS INJURED WHILE TRYING TO CAPTURE ALLIGATOR

Local media outlets report that the men were trying to catch the 8-foot-long reptile Friday morning at Wildcat Run Golf & Country Club in Estero. Fire officials say the alligator bit one trapper on the hand, and the second trapper sustained cuts to his hand while trying to help the first. Both trappers were taken to a nearby hospital. Their injuries weren’t considered life-threatening.

TEEN SHOT BY FLORIDA POLICE OFFICER DURING BURGLARY CALL

Local news organizations report the 17-year-old was in stable condition at a hospital after the shooting late Thursday in Rockledge. No officers were injured in the shooting. According to a police incident report, two teens had been breaking into cars and fled in a white vehicle, which police tried to stop. The report says the vehicle hit a police cruiser and ended up in a ditch.
