MONROE, N.C. (AP) - Authorities in Union County say an undercover investigation resulted in 21 businesses being cited for selling alcohol to people under 21 years old.

The Charlotte Observer reports (https://bit.ly/2gVI1Yj) the Union County Sheriff’s Office and Monroe police conducted a joint undercover operation which began in June and continued into September. The operation involved purchases at 91 locations in various communities.

Investigators said they used a civilian under age 21 to try buying alcohol at each location.

Selling alcohol or malt beverages to a person under 21 years of age is a misdemeanor under state law. The North Carolina ABC Commission will be notified of the alleged violations and the establishments could face civil penalties.
