MESA, Ariz. (AP) - The city of Mesa has appointed a new chief to lead its Fire and Medical Department.

Mary Cameli is the first woman to serve as the city’s fire chief.

She has worked for the department for 33 years in a variety of job posts, including assistant fire chief.

Cameli also was among the first female firefighters hired by the city.

She replaced Chief Harry Beck after his retirement.
