PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Philadelphia police say the mother of a 2-year-old boy whose death was ruled a homicide has been charged with endangering the welfare of a child.

Twenty-three-year-old Andrea Worrell was arrested Thursday; her boyfriend - who is not the child’s biological father - remains in police custody but has not been charged.

Officers were dispatched to a home in the city’s Kensington section just before midnight Tuesday following reports that a toddler was unresponsive.

The boy, Zyair Worrell, was rushed to a hospital and died early Wednesday.

An exam revealed Zyair suffered a lacerated liver, bruising to his chest and ear and an abrasion over his eye. The toddler also tested positive for THC, the main psychoactive component in marijuana.

The investigation is continuing.

Worrell’s newly assigned public defender says she can’t comment on the case yet.
