BURLINGTON, Iowa (AP) - A Burlington man faces an attempted murder charge after police say he shot another man over a $50 debt.

The Hawk Eye reports (https://bit.ly/2gQAfjA ) that 20-year-old Alfred David Buford III could face up to 25 years in prison if convicted.

Buford is accused of shooting 27-year-old Donald Craig Hunt, also of Burlington, after Hunt refused to settle a bet. Hunt told police he eventually stopped responding to Buford’s messages because he didn’t have the money. Hunt says some of Buford’s messages were threatening.

Police say Buford went to Hunt’s home after 11 p.m. on Nov. 21. Hunt says Buford pointed a gun at him, and when he pushed Buford’s hand down, Buford shot him in the thigh.

A phone message left with Buford’s public defender wasn’t immediately returned.
