DOVER, Ark. (AP) - Arkansas State Police say the person who was fatally shot by a Pope County deputy Thursday was an 83-year-old man who reportedly fired a rifle at officers.

State police on Friday identified the man killed as Quinton Phillips of Dover. Authorities say deputies responded to a call Thursday of an armed disturbance in a rural area near Dover, about 65 miles northwest of Little Rock.

Arkansas State Police spokesman Bill Sadler says the deputies were confronted on arrival by an armed man, later identified as Phillips. Sadler says that when the deputies ordered the man to drop the gun, he instead moved to cover and began firing toward the deputies.

Sadler says at least one deputy returned fire. Phillips died later at a hospital in nearby Russellville.
