CANTON, N.Y. (AP) - State police say a northern New York woman has been fatally struck by a car while attempting to get two loose dogs out of the roadway.

Troopers say 52-year-old June Peoples of Colton was crossing the road to retrieve one of the dogs in Canton in St. Lawrence around 7 p.m. Thursday when she was hit by a passing vehicle.

She was taken to Canton-Potsdam Hospital, where she was pronounced dead an hour later.

Troopers say the 79-year-old Canton man driving the car wasn’t ticketed. Police say the accident remains under investigation.
