LOS ANGELES (AP) - A Los Angeles County sheriff’s sergeant has given a fellow deputy the gift of life.
The department says Darrin Offringa donated his left kidney to Deputy Kevin Ay on Nov. 29. Offringa underwent a four-hour operation.
Both men are recovering.
Ay was Offringa’s patrol trainee and became a friend. They stayed in touch even though they worked in different units.
In November 2013, Ay was diagnosed with renal failure and his condition had been deteriorating.
Offringa worked at the Carson station and Ay worked at the Lakewood station.
Ay says he always considered Offringa as a mentor but now thinks of him as a brother.
