MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Officials in Vermont’s capital city say an ice rink will soon occupy the Statehouse lawn.

Assistant City Manager Jessie Baker said Wednesday the state’s Department of Buildings and General Services has come to an agreement with the city of Montpelier to allow a temporary skating rink on the Capitol lawn.

Baker tells The Times-Argus the 40-by-80-foot rink will be built between Christmas and New Year’s Day.

Montpelier Alive’s Put a Rink on It Committee launched the effort earlier this year. The city council unanimously approved the plan last week.

Baker says the plan is to open the rink Jan. 4, the first day of the legislative session. It will be open Wednesday to Friday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. and from noon to 7 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.
