PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - A 90-year-old man who struck and killed a pedestrian in a Portland crosswalk has pleaded guilty.

The Oregonian/OregonLive reports (https://bit.ly/2h5PacO ) that Edmond Pomroy Balding on Friday was sentenced to 60 months of probation and a permanent loss of driving privileges after pleading guilty to criminally negligent homicide in the death Amber Michelle Lapine.

Balding struck 34-year-old Lapine on March 18 as she walked in a marked, illuminated crosswalk. Police determined that Balding never applied his brakes before striking Lapine, who was thrown more than 50 feet and who died nine days later at a hospital.

Balding, a World War II veteran, told the judge that the crash has ruined his life and that he has given away the car that killed Lapine.
