WASHINGTON (AP) - The District of Columbia has settled a lawsuit filed by immigrants who accused the state of violating a law that mandates access to interpreters.

The Washington Post reports (https://wapo.st/2g55EA6 ) that the city has agreed to put a multilingual employee in D.C. Department of Human Services centers that will help residents with language access. Under the settlement, the city will also create a “language access customer advisory group.”

The lawsuit was filed last year by the Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights on behalf of two Latin American immigrant women.

One of the women said she was denied access to a Spanish-speaking interpreter during visits to DHS to figure out why her insurance had been canceled. Another woman said her food stamps were mistakenly cut because she couldn’t get an interpreter.
