MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Vermont House Democrats have officially chosen South Hero Rep. Mitzi Johnson as their nominee for speaker.

The Rutland Herald reports (https://bit.ly/2h5HS8K) Johnson won support from her fellow Democrats during a Saturday gathering. She’ll face Republicans’ nominee, Rep. Linda Myers of Essex, but is almost certain to be elected speaker given Democrats’ control of the chamber.

Johnson is thanking her colleagues and encouraging them to tell her if they think her leadership is taking the House off course.

Outgoing Speaker Shap Smith is leaving the House after an unsuccessful bid for lieutenant governor.

Johnson was first elected to the legislature in 2002 and serves as chair of the House Appropriations Committee, which oversees how state money is spent.
