AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - Maine’s wild cats are on notice as the annual bobcat hunt is underway.

The hunt started on Thursday and runs until Feb. 14. Hunters are not limited by bag limits or possession limits.

Bobcats are common throughout most of Maine, but they are also reclusive and rarely seen in the wild. They can be easily confused with the Canada lynx, a threatened species that is protected under the Endangered Species Act.

Maine’s season for fox hunting is also underway and lasts until Feb. 28. The final portions of the deer hunt, which are limited to hunters who use archery or muzzleloaders, lasts until Dec. 10.
