CHAPPELL, Neb. (AP) - A former Deuel County sheriff’s deputy who was shot four times last year while serving arrest warrants is slowly recovering but still unable to work.

Hutchinson was wounded on Dec. 3, 2015, while attempting to arrest a suspect in Big Springs. The suspect was subsequently killed by another officer.

Hutchinson left a hospital Feb. 22 and has been recovering since.

The Omaha World-Herald reports (https://bit.ly/2gToQQn ) that Hutchinson celebrated his 53rd birthday on Friday, but he hasn’t been cleared by doctors to work. He still has trouble sitting or standing for long periods.

“I feel like I’m almost there,” Hutchinson said Friday at his rural Deuel County home. “Just sitting around the house is not me. I want to be doing something. But I can only go for so long and then I have to stop and sit down a little bit, try to stretch and then go again.”

The career law enforcement officer still attends several physical therapy and occupational therapy appointments each week. Hutchinson said his doctors have told him it will likely take two years for his body to reach some new normal level.

Hutchinson said he lost much of the abdominal muscle he had because of the multiple surgeries and recoveries. He’s currently limited to lifting no more than 10 pounds, but hopes to be able to lift up to 50 pounds once he earns his doctor’s release.

For now, Hutchinson focuses on his recovery and doing what he can to help with housework. His wife recently returned to fulltime work at their daughter and son-in-law’s car repair shop in Grant.

“She wasn’t real keen on leaving me home by myself,” Hutchinson said. He sometimes goes along to hang out at the shop.
