DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - A massive horse barn fire in Madison County has left one horse dead and another missing.

Neighbors tell Des Moines television station KCCI reports (https://bit.ly/2g85mZl ) that 29 horses were inside the barn when the fire started Friday night. The station says one horse died, another is missing and a third is being treated at the Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine.

Officials had reported Saturday that they believed all of the horses had escaped the fire that destroyed the 8,000 square-foot barn at the Maffitt Lake Equestrian Center near Cumming.

More than 100 volunteers helped search for horses that bolted from the area. The center’s horse show facility is now being converted into a temporary home for the remaining horses.
