PENDLETON, Ore. (AP) - Joe Hessel is now in charge of the state Department of Forestry’s Northeast Oregon District.

The East Oregonian reports (https://bit.ly/2g2GSxm ) that Hessel replaces John Buckman, who retired from the district forester position last week.

Hessel is familiar with the district, having worked there for more than 30 years. He’ll oversee management of about 2 million acres of private forest lands in Umatilla, Union, Baker and Wallowa counties, as well as small portions of Morrow, Grant and Malheur counties.

Hessel also acts an operations chief for one of ODF’s incident management teams, responding to summer wildfires.
