PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Fire officials are investigating a blaze at a vacant apartment building in Portland, Maine, and they say at least one squatter appeared to be living there.

The Portland Press Herald reports (https://bit.ly/2guGrgv ) Deputy Fire Chief Robert Thompson says firefighters responded to a building on Sunday night and concluded the third floor of a building nearby was actually burning.

The newspaper says an apartment unit and the floor under it were destroyed by the fire before firefighters could bring the inferno under control.

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.

Police closed a section of St. John Street for roughly two hours.
