SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A recount by Salt Lake County elections has confirmed that incumbent Republican state Rep. LaVar Christensen narrowly won his election.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports (https://bit.ly/2g2okly ) that Monday’s recount of more than 17,000 votes showed that Christensen won by five votes over Democrat challenger Suzanne Harrison. The first tally showed Christensen won by three votes.

Harrison requested the recount after losing by the slim margin.

Election officials fed ballots through counting machines and closely reviewed dozens of ballots that had been disqualified. Lawyers for both candidates watched closely.

The Salt Lake County Council will vote to officially adopt the results in a Tuesday meeting.

Christensen was trailing on election night by almost 200 votes, but the race flipped over the next two weeks as election officials finished counting ballots.
