ANNISTON, Ala. (AP) - An east Alabama sheriff says a corrections officer is accused of assaulting a prisoner inside the Calhoun County Jail.

Sheriff Matthew Wade says an inmate first assaulted the officer, who struck back after the prisoner was handcuffed and subdued with pepper spray. Wade says the officer also is accused of assaulting a co-worker.

The sheriff says officers have been placed on leave, and the state is investigating.

Wade issued a statement about the incident Monday. He says it occurred Nov. 27 inside the county jail in Anniston.

Authorities aren’t releasing the name of the officers or the inmate who were involved.
