ATHENS, Ga. (AP) - Athens-Clarke County police say an officer was attacked and sustained mild concussions while attempting to arrest a domestic abuse suspect.

Athens-Clarke County police spokesman Epifanio Rodriquez tells local media that officers received a call about a domestic dispute Saturday at an East Athens apartment. Once officers arrived at the scene, Rodriquez says Carlos Merritt walked toward Officer Gary Crosby in an aggressive manner, prompting officers to arrest Merritt.

As officers tried to gain control of Merritt, he resisted arrest.

Rodriquez says Merritt then threw Crosby off a couch and onto a concrete floor, where he hit his head and shoulder.

Crosby sustained mild concussions, sprains and bruises and was taken to a hospital. He was released later that night.

Merritt was arrested and charged with simple battery, false imprisonment and felony obstruction. It’s unclear if he has an attorney.
